Times of transition are known to be high risk periods for mental health symptoms and disorders in athletes, but disordered eating and eating disorders during these times have been relatively underresearched. This novel narrative systematic review summarizes the literature on the risk of disordered eating and eating disorders across a comprehensive set of transitions: retirement, injury, COVID-19 pandemic-related transitions, pregnancy, and the off-season. The review suggests the risk is high during these times. Psychoeducational and other prevention programming on and screening for disordered eating and eating disorders during times of transition should be implemented for athletes, and further reserach must be undertaken.
