Psychotherapy is a required and essential component of psychiatry residency training. There is, however, a tremendous amount of variability in the amount, quality, and type of training that is provided in programs. The challenges in offering comprehensive psychotherapy training include a predominant focus on acute care management, differential priorities of academic psychiatry departments, uneven presence of faculty with content expertise, and lack of supervisors in various modalities of therapy.
